Today I wish to share my review of TUESDAYS WITH MORRIE BY MITCH ALBOM, an all-time favorite. I love this book because it challenged me and made me rethink of what really matters in my life. A friend of mine did a video on the book recently and it reminded me of it. I thought I should review it too.
TUESDAYS WITH MORRIE is a nonfiction book. As it is written on the cover, it is all about an old man Morrie, a young man Mitch Albom (author of this book) and life greatest lessons. Morrie was a sociologist teacher, he was old but young at heart: cool, funny, humble and he loved to dance. Mitch was his student, after graduation Mitch had promised to stay in touch with his favorite teacher, a promise he failed to keep. For a long time, they have not been talking until Morrie was diagnosed with ALS. 😕What is ALS!??.....well, Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or Lou Gehrig’s disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects muscles and impacts physical function. It starts with weakness of hands and feet then arms, legs, etc. When it reaches the throat, you become unable to speak and swallow. Ultimately, muscles involved in breathing may be weakened causing difficulty in breathing, as the disease worsens death may results. 🙁Enough with medical explanations! long story short, ALS is terminal. Unfortunately, the old man was condemned to a death sentence. Put yourself in his place. What would you do if you were told that you are left with few years to live? When Morrie realized he was about to die he decided to use his time left for the best use. He is like: “It’s horrible to watch my body slowly wilt away to nothing. But it’s also wonderful because of all the time I get to say good-bye.” He started sharing things he didn’t want take to the grave. One day he was on a famous TV show sharing his philosophies about living with death’s shadow, from where Mitch saw him and decided to reconnect with him. By then, Mitch was struggling with finding meaning of his life. Luckily, his visits to Morrie turned out to be helpful. Mitch hugely benefited from the wisdom of his dying professor. They would sit and talk about things that really matters in life: like life itself, death and love. According to Morrie one thing that matters most in this life is connecting to one another through compassion and love. Quoting him “The most important thing in life is to learn how to give out love, and to let it come in.” This reminded me of a quote, I heard in a movie said by a person who was dying, a man's last words: “I don’t know if life is greater than death but love was more than either”. Love really is the most important thing of all. So, Mitch went to see Morrie every Tuesday till his death(hence the name of the book). He had been recording their conversations and he based on them in writing this book which was published in 1997. I have to admit, following this story of Morrie dying slow by slow from ALS is a bit emotional. There are some points were the book gets really sad and there are other points where I had to pause and think. It is a such reflective read; it makes you realize this thing we already know but refuse to believe. TUESDAYS WITH MORRIE is an eye opener, If you have not read it yet, I urge you to make it your next read. If you have read it let me know your take in comments.
